Sumatra is an island located in western Indonesia to the west of the Sunda islands. It is the largest island in Indonesia and is the sixth largest island in the world. It is separated in the northeast from the Malay Peninsula by the Strait of Malacca and in the south from Java by the Sunda Strait.
As of 2010, Sumatra’s population has reached 50.37 million people. It is home to many rainforests, volcanoes, and other natural parks. In fact, the rainforests of Sumatra are what many people think to be the most important part of Sumatra. In addition, on the island of Sumatra, there are three protected, national parks. The programs that protect these areas are called the UNESCO project. The UNESCO protects the rain forests of Sumatra, but is also protects the culture and world heritage of Sumatra as well. The rain forest are special because they have unique plants and animals there, but they also represent the biggest problem.
The biggest problem is that a lot of the animals on the island are losing their natural habitats and need to be protected. These animals need to be protected because Sumatra is losing its rain forests at a rapid pace due to transmigration, pulp and paper production, and palm oil production and other development. This is pushing many of Sumatra’s animal species out of their natural habitats. Between 1985 and 2007, the island of Sumatra had only 30% forest cover which is only 13 million acres. Even though this number may sound like a lot, there is still a big chunk of the island that is missing its beautiful forests. This is why Sumatra needs to be protected.

In conclusion, Sumatra, (which is in Indonesia), is unique because it is covered in rainforest and has an abundance of animals living there. Some of the animals, (like the Sumatran tiger) are not seen anywhere else in the world. Sumatra has some protected parks. However, we need to find more ways to protect the animals (like the tigers) to make certain that their habitat is still around for years to come. We can support them by keeping Sumatra’s jungles and forests safe from development such as palm oil plantations. So by your help, people around the world can one by one make a change and help to save the beautiful island of Sumatra.
